Leaving aside the debate over whether helmets prevent or reduce head trauma in major impacts, there are a host of minor injuries that helmets prevent. There are cuts and grazes that even minor falls can cause to the head when wearing a hat, that just don't happen if wearing a helmet. Even the face receives a lot of protection from cuts and grazes if the helmet is fitted and worn properly.
because I'm so inclined .....

I used to fall over a lot, never hurt my head. In fact, never hurt anything other than a thumb.
The closest I came to serious injury was a drunk Dane who carved my pole in half which was inches away from my leg. But a helmet wouldn't have made a jot of difference there.

I hear these stories of "this bloke I know" and so on but they're so few and far between I'm still convinced that nothing requires me to wear a helmet. You could fall over walking down the high street and bang your head but you wouldn't go shopping in a helmet. I know this discussion goes on and on and everyone's got their own views, but i still see no reason for me to wear a helmet or for anyone to tell me I should.

I've never had a car crash, but it doesn't stop me putting my seatbelt on.

Somebody asked me if he needed a parachute to skydive once - I told him only if he wanted to skydive twice. I wear a helmet so that I can go skiing the next day - when I've bought a 6 day ski pass!

Everybody is entitled to choose, but we always wear helmets.
We go in a large group and everyone now wears a helmet, for me it makes perfect sense.

I have fallen over (not often  ) One time I fell and smacked my helmet, and broke it  it was at speed, just caught an edge at the end of a long day. I did have a headache, but nothing more, my helmet was replaced :!:

Can I say what would have happened if I had not been wearing no, but I am glad I was.

You cant sky dive twice without using a parachute, but I have skied 18 trips without a helmet, not a good comparison IMO

Seat belts are compulsory for all & helmets are not, if they were all would use them, so not a good comparison.
