Are they any good or just a useless novelty?

I've got one for the 3V and one for the EK

Great idea, works well

Only downside is that changes to the map year to year make it out of date (if you are returning to the same ski area).

But worth the money for sure

Probably.

May have a value if you are spending a season in a resort but as piste maps are free i don't really see the point.

I agree that piste maps are free but if its a big map (such as the 3V) and its windy then it gets blown out and wet, ripped etc

I still carry a map for lift times etc but I like the Wipeout

I always carry two, one in my pocket that i use (until it rips or gets wet) then if needed i always have a spare.
I like the idea of the cloth but i just don't think i would have one.

I'm a two map guy too - one in back of pants one in front of jacket so it has to be a proper wipe out fall to destroy them both!

Whether or not they are worth it depends upon how much you value your goggle/glasses lens/s. Although they say they are a microfibre they don't mention what the fibre is. Personally, I'd say get yourself a decent calotherm lens cloth, get a bunch of maps and tear a couple into specific sections - job done.
