Hi All,
I have to decide between Sestriere and Courmayeur for a 4-day skiing excursion. We're a party of two and we're both beginners, so we'll definitely be limited to green and blue slopes.
Other than the quality of the skiing, I'm interested in:
- How easy it is to get there;
- What else the village has to offer;
- The surrounding scenery;
- Any major price differences.
Which would you recommend?
Edit: I see a lot of people prefer Sauze d'Oulx over Sestriere, so let's throw that in there as well.

Courmayeur enough skiing to keep you going for 4 days but best restaurants by miles nuisance getting to and from slopes but one offsets the other nice village easy to get to from Turin/ Geneva
Bar Roma is a must free food and Maison Fillipo in Entreves also the tuneel used to be good value

Havent been to Courmayeur, and theres a reason why. Its very limited slopes and a bugger to get to the slopes too. But it might be perfect for 4 days.
Sestriere is a dull place but the skiing is good and its all close by. I'd defo suggest stopping in Sauze though and you'll find your way over to Sestriere for a nice days skiing.

Some of the ski pro's resident in Chamonix love Courmayeur, because of the extensive uncrowded slopes -)
It also offers another route onto the Vallee Blanche avoiding the walk down the Arete. A Guide is necessary for this.
For beginners, there is a stunning backdrop, Mont Blanc :D

and you can ski la thuile as well on the same pass

......whereas in sestriere you can only ski sauze, sansicario, montgenevre and serre chevalier on the same lift pass.

Thanks for all the replies.
Given that both of us are fairly recent beginners, the variety of slopes doesn't matter as much to me as the availability of one or two gentle blue slopes with a decent view.
Following that I'd really love to go somewhere with a nice mountain village feel, think Zermatt or Chamonix.

Courmayeur - only downside is there is a 5 minute walk to the godola but you can leave your ski's and boots in the lockers at the top.
There's enough skiing for 4 days but not for a week.
Nice town, relatively short transfer.
Sestriere is part of a much bigger area but the transfer is longer & it's not something you'll really make full use of in 4 days.
