It is horific, truly!
Sorry about my view if you were thinking of a trip.

You will wait and wait and wait and wait for a lift in the morning and then find there is nowhere to go higher up.

Mind you, the resort isn't open yet and the snow hasn't arrived so that may be why there is a long wait (many days) for a lift and the fact that the skiing is horific coz there isn't much snow.

We skied down into Chatel from Avoriaz last season and found some wonderful runs, such fun in fact, that we'd like to go back and do it properly in better conditions. We haven't skied on the village side so I can't express an opinion on that.
The area around Plaine Dranse was good and there are plenty of cute mountain restaurants around there. The good news is that an old 2-seater chairlift there has been replaced with a 6-seater detachable this season which should speed things up a bit.
Chatel itself is a very pretty village, it's part of the Portes du Soleil ski area so you'd have plenty of skiing on your doorstep if you don't mind taking a bus or driving a short distance and there's cross-border skiing into Switzerland.

Mate of mine went there last season. Said it was a real ballache getting out of the resort, and as most of the local runs were low the snow was rubbish, so they spent all day taking lifts to find better snow. Said anyone who went there must be either mad, or have far too much money as its ridiculously expensive; 15 euros for a coffee, 12 for a beer. 30 euros for a pizza out.

You're right OldAndy, it's horrific! I must admit, we didn't enjoy it in January 2006. The conditions were just too good & there were far too many options with the PDS pass. Every day we had the chore of deciding whether to stay in France, or head over the border into Switzerland. Sometimes, we even had to share the slopes with one or two other people. Our noses got sunburnt, on a couple of occasions it snowed and we had to watch a major snowboarding competion in Avoriaz. Don't think we'll bother going back! :mrgreen:

Looks like I have made an horrific mistake, the snow looks totally rubbish Sal, lift queue's I just don't do lift queue's Andy and to top all off I'm facing the prices of Austria, thanks Tony.

The resort is part of Portes du Soleil which is the largest international linked ski area in the world with over 650 km of varied terrain spread across 8 French and 4 Swiss resorts.

You will have an almost endless choice of runs on your doorstep.

Is Tony on wind up...I never paid anywhere near any of those prices for beer, coffee or Pizza and I have eaten and drunk all over the PDS. Prices were much higher in Switzerland but not that high!
