Col has very kindly informed me, the name of the old film I was looking for, is 'Buona sera Mrs Campbell' 1968 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buona_Sera,_Mrs._Campbell

Even Wikipedia agrees that they pinched the plot of this film for Mamma Mia. And according to them it won 2 golden globe awards, for best actress and for best original song. It also won the Writer's guild of America Award for best written American original screenplay.

So that's one mystery solved. Thank you Col. I'm still waiting for someone to explain the meaning of the end of 'I Robot' to me. This is a great website.

...and there's another one I never have to watch.
You're saving me tons of time not having to watch these films, Ally

Ally,

This is in danger of being a very interesting moral discussion.
Do you notice that older movies have starker goodie/baddie divides whereas modern movies have far greyer areas where one has to take a conscious stance on moral dilemmas, taboo subjects and the like?

Is this because society is becoming more complicated and the movies reflect this, or was society simpler when we had simply the good and bad, and ignored the ugly!!

A brilliant turning point for me was 'Blazing Saddles' , which took a simple goodie/baddie movie( a Western) and confronted so many taboo subjects, and moral dilemmas that it almost confined the Western type movie to the dustbin of history!!!( And it was funny!!!!)

In fact, as an interesting aside, I was recently skiing in North America when Blazing Saddles came on the telly. Now, for me. the whole point of the movie was to illustrate how ignorant and bigoted the white townsfolk were, accentuated by their use of the word 'Nigger'. The word was blanked out in the version I watched, !!!

Does this show a legitimate societal change , or have they totally missed the point? Discuss.

Brucie,
I will think about this, while I'm cleaning, and get back to you.

But, as you said, it is an interesting point for discussion - related perhaps to the old empire days? My grandparents were really proud of the British Empire, and honestly believed that the British did a great job educating and controlling the ignorant 'natives'. My own great-grandfather was a medical missionary. 'We' were always in the right, and 'they' were always in the wrong. Nowadays colonialism is almost a rude word in itself, and none of us can be so sure that we are always right - a 'goody'.

Private Bryan,
I wouldn't be too sure about that. Sometimes the more people insist they're right, and the more 'noise' they make about it, the less they believe it themselves. Only, of course, they're not going to admit it, because I think everyone hates to 'lose face'.

So, we have gone from favourite tv programmes, to classic films, and no one has mentioned Schindlers List, Pulp Fiction, or Sleepless in Seattle....
