As for the Guinness Can't say I've had that problem to be honest. Maybe u have a more delicate disposition. ;-)

Chateauneuf du pape can be picked up for between £8-£12 pounds and there are plenty of good french wines under a fiver, you just need to know what your looking for.
PS don't buy wine on price, as do I really appreciate a £20 bottle of wine , and I beg to differ you will not find a nicer red than a Chateauneuf.
There are some nice new world wines mainly South African, Australian too much Tannin, South American are getting pricey, have a look for a nice provincial Rose, very pleasant and still under a fiver.

Well I have never paid more than £13 for a bottle of CdP, and as Ian says, you don't buy wine on price.EmmaEvs wrote:Chateauneuf du pape illustrates my point quite well. La Tour de Marenneon illustrates MY point perfectly, a wonderfully smooth Cotes de Ventoux (part Syrah, part Grenache in case you didn't know much about the blend of grapes.... ) ) and its under a fiver in Tesco's on special offer http://www.tesco.com/wine/product/details/default.aspx?searchBox=Cotes+Du&id=263468798
I've had quite a lot of "new world" wines, and have to say that I haven't found anything that competes. Yarunga Hill, Rawsons Retreat, Wolf Blass, Oxford Landing.....I could go on. They're all ok for an easy drink, but theres no real substance to them, nothing that jumps out and punches you in the face like the 2 Frenchies I mentioned above.
If you like reds, I'd also recommend Farnese, cracking Multipulicano d'Abruzzo (thats Italian, Emma ) )http://www.lifeinabruzzo.com/farnese-montepulciano-dabruzzo/
I don't like white wine at all, so can't comment on anything in that market, but I do drink Rose frequently. There are some really good ones from South America, including my favourite Roko http://www.tesco.com/wine/product/details/default.aspx?N=8131+4294964953&id=266307426 And its on special offer at the moment!
I guess its all down to individual tastes, but I stand by what I said in that I haven't found a new world red to compete yet.

The two fizzes we enjoy are Tesco premier cru about £13 a bottle and also there is a waitrose own brand which I have run out of so can't remember the exact branding but comes in slightly more expensive at £16.99, both are very good quality.
