Hmmm, look at the shape and compare with the shape your foot, ankle and lower leg will make in a ski boot.
Your feet are probably the most important part of your body when skiing, so it's not worth skimping in that area.
That said, some people have feet that feel everything and need constant boot adjustment, others just stick their foot in the boot in the morning and need do nothing more.
Tube socks are a disaster for the former, but may suffice for the lsatter group.

Because they're uniform in size all the way they go baggy in places that you don't want bagginess. And the seams are often really bulky. By the end of the day you could end up feeling like you have frozen peas in your boots.
I'm not even sure this post makes sense. :|
Try them.

I wish I could meet the person who first decided to strap 2 planks to their feet and throw themselves down a mountain

Sm4sh I have skiied in tube socks before and I was okay with them. As EmmaEvs said sometimes the seam at the toe can be really bulky and if it is I turn the sock inside out. If you decide you like skiing then next year then you can invest in proper ski socks. Hope you enjoy your ski holiday as you have waited a long time for it and I can't wait to hear how you get on. :D

Save yourself a lot of trouble and dont take those tube socks to wear, unless its inside your apres shoes.
They'll roll and gather and makes creases, thus affecting your comfort and performance inside your boots.
Anyone who gave you them for christmas clearly doesn't ski themselves. I'd be asking for receipts lol
