I had a few PMs this year from J2skiers asking for advice on The Hof, as it seems I am some kind of resident expert on the place. I was as always more than happy to share what knowledge of the ski area and resort I have.
However, those enquiries aroused a desire to return, and I have this week booked to go back for a week on 26th Feb 2011, and I really can't wait. I will be going with 4 friends who I have been here with before; 2 of them once, and the other 2 many times. All of them had mentioned the possibility of a return to M sometime soon, so I found the best deal for us and we are now confirmed.
So, roll call......anyone else going to be there that week?

I would always prefer to stop in the centre of M rather than out in the sticks though.
Interesting if you dont like gondolas - from the town there are 2 rides up: the Ahorn is a massive 160 man cable car which climbs high up the steep mountain. Stunning views for most, you will probably be looking at the floor. It is a huge modern cable car. Theres limited skiing up there, but the run off (Ahorn Abfahrt) is fantastic when conditions mean its open top to bottom, and the Ebbenwald red which runs to midpoint is also excellent.
The other ride up is the Penkenbahn, the yellow gondolas that hold 15 people in a tight squeeze! I can recommend getting there for opening time so you have a gondola to yourself or at least only a few people. Its not for the faint hearted though as it goes up a long long way, and goes up from the low valley and over a 2nd valley, with the cabins suspended very high up off the ground.
Dont close your eyes, the views are amazing. Take my advice and have a good look around outside, as I am sure that will help you conquer your fear.
Its a cracking place to ski, I had forgotten how good it was having not been for a couple of years.

I absolutely love Mayrhofen, and will always regard it as my - so to speak, home mountain, everything about it is great, the town, nightlife, people and most importantly the skiing.
However after going back there for 4 years back to back, we've decided to explore the rest of Europe and what that has to offer.
Be sure to go see Martin Jonathan in the Strass sports bar, such a good atmosphere and lots of banter !

Tony, we're going the week before (half term) and staying in Lanersbach, which is at the foot of Eggalm part of the Mayrhofen ski area. Mrs JS96 and I had a long weekend there in March and have booked for a group of 18 next Feb.
I can thoroughly recommend staying in L, its easy to get on the mountain and also only 12 mins on the bus from the glacier - that end of the area is also quieter on the pistes but still easy to get to Rastkogel, Penken etc.
I'll make sure its all well groomed for you before we leave...

Thats what I did, went there about 4 times on the trot, and decided to have a break and see more of Europe. But we missed it so much, for all the reasons posted, that we are going back.GummyBear wrote:I absolutely love Mayrhofen, and will always regard it as my - so to speak, home mountain, everything about it is great, the town, nightlife, people and most importantly the skiing.

We have booked to go to Mayrhofen in early January. It will be our first time in the resort and we are really looking forward to it. My only worry is the access to the mountain as both me and my OH are frightened of heights (I'm fine with chairlifts but am not keen on Gondolas) – still, I can shut my eyes I suppose. :-(
We got a pretty good deal as Thompson are doing 2 for 1 lift passes for Austria at the moment.
Our second ski holiday is booked for the 27th February. We're going back to Arabba having visited last year and fallen in love with the place.
Two months and counting :D

I always knew it was a steep gondola ride up but decided to risk it anyway. I survived the Marmolada cable car (admittedly squashed like sardine surrounded by 70 odd other people and with threats of divorce from my OH) so I'm sure I'll be fine. I might risk admiring the view towards the end of the week, it certainly sounds worth it.
