Hi all, as I am staying with my son (who works in Milan) during our Aussie summer, does anybody have any info about day trip ski-ing from Milan? Is train travel feasible for this or should I look at car hire only? Also what are the most accessible resorts (I am experienced and my son is a beginner)? Any info greatly appreciated. Cheers, John

Hi John, welcome to J2Ski...
You've got a good choice of resorts within a couple of hours drive, albeit probably the best selection will need 2 to 3 hours each way.
Just for you - Ski Resorts near Milan Linate - 8)
Not sure about feasibility of trains but a hire car will give you more choice. Your journey times are going to be somewhat variable with snow, queues, etc. so you may be best to plan overnight stops rather than day trips (and ski 2 days instead of 1). Italy is blessed with many family-run small hotels, so it should be easy to find places to suit your plans and budget.
A couple of our regulars know the area quite well and should drop in when they get off the beach... you'll have a blast though.

I have very little knowledge of skiing near Milan, but if it's any help snowy mountains were visible from my bedroom when i was there for a short break back in late march! I'm sure there'll be something available!

Hi, within one and quarter, maximal one and half you could have a choose of many ski areas with different features, what are you looking for..... Groomed, off piste?

Hi John, The only train-reachable station I know of is Bardonecchia, it takes 3hrs to arrive by train, or 2h30 by car. Very good resort which hosted the 2006 Olympics, with train station directly inside the resort served by the Milan-Paris line.

Bormio is 2.5hrs away on the train-milan central to Tirano and then the connecting bus (which runs on same timetable ie will wait for train) to bormio is 30minutes
if youre goign for offpiste though, take a transceiver to avoid the fines!!

Hi John
You can get a train to Aosta - its about 3 and a half hours - and then get a cable car from just behind the station up to Pila.
The trains do leave early - we met some guys from Milan who had used this route on the lift up around 10am - but they dod say they got a train about 6.00am!
Pila a great mixed ability resort, which would be great for a day or two - although I would try to do the overnight stop if you can to spread the travelling!
