Not used it myself (always looked a bit expensive) but a bit of googling turns up a fair number of unhappy customers; also some discussion on snowheads.

Also - Dragon's Den Investors got burned.

The Garmin Foretrex 401 looks like a promising alternative.

I suspect he means that GPS apps for smartphones kill the battery life (my golf range finder is great but, even with Bluetooth and Wifi off, it will take the battery from 100% to less than 10 in 4 hours
