My parents went to Canada earlier this year. Bringing back some 'Hot Chillys' ski socks. My mum insisted I borrowed a pair as she'd found them really good. I dutifully packed them along with my usual pairs, not thinking much about it. I tried them on my first day skiing. First thing I noticed is that they were much thinner than my usual ones. Hence they were much comfier. I have thick calves and these were a godsend. I didn't use the others at all that week. I emailed the company to find a UK stockist. Unfortunately they don't have one. They can't be the only makers of 'thinner' socks. Can anyone recommend a brand that does something similar?

Tons of them, available from any ski shop. Expect to pay between £15 and £28 for a pair.

Smartwool have various thicknesses and are my socks of choice. I have everything from 'race light' (or something) to medium thickness. Well worth the £20 or so you can expect to pay.

Another alternative is to look at the women's socks in a good dept store. I have a few pairs that work well for skiing. You are looking for a wool blend (no cotton), with a fine weave, and with no texture. Seams should be very flat. This time of year, longer wool blend socks are often on sale. I just bought a pair for $3. Women's socks work well on my UK mens size 9 feet, as they fit very closely, like a ski sock.
I have several pairs of Smart Wool, and also Bridgedale, which are very good.
