Obviously the mistake I am making is only skiing at 1200m in March - jeez! I knew I was doing something wrong...

My March trips have been stopping (and skiing higher than) 1500m each time.
Sauze was slushy the last run down to 1500m, Verbier was the same, Serre Che was best of them all with better snow and colder conditions. Mind you that was a couple of weeks earlier than the others.
I think you'd be asking for trouble skiing much below that height at that time of year.
