A pair of skis is not enough

You see, a friend in Niederau, finds that buying skis in pairs just doesn't meet his needs. He always feels the need to buy an extra ski. As you can see, this provides some difficulty with the ski shops, unwilling to split a pair.
He, in turn, is unwilling to pay for two pairs of skis, when he maintains that he can't help himself. I've known him for many years, and I don't think he has a phobia, you know it is maybe just a case of that is how he sees life.
Would appreciate any thoughts that might help.

FQ! My friend would be mortified! How would you feel if you had this as an issue?

Well it's a small world, I think I know his sister:

She ski's too, but chooses to buy 3 pairs at a time, to save confusion.
