Standard Ski Ability Tests & Qualifications

Hi,

Does anyone know of any international or national (UK) ski standards/tests that allow ski students to measure and qualify their ability?

Thinking about other sports I have done - judo and ice skating - there are organisations that provide tests and trained people who are qualified to assess and grade students according to their ability. This provides a structured learning framework and sensible learning path.

Being new to skiing, I'm not sure any such organisations exist. I have had a look around on the Internet - but to no avail. Reading the books and having had a few lessons, there doesn't seem to be a consitent approach to teaching skiing. And maybe there shouldn't be one? However, personally, I would rather follow the gospel of some credible organisation, rather than someone who teaches what happens to work them.

In Val Thorens, Prosneige ski school give the kids a little certificate book, with the different levels written in it, and what they entail, and then they mark where your kid is at the end of the week, and they have a little ceremony for all the kids and give them their medals.

But, as an adult, I've never been given an official 'mark book' (or a medal) after completing the week with Prosneige (or ESF).
