I was in a ski shop the other day and there was a man clearly determined to buy a pair of skis, the salesman in the shop was holding them up beside him commenting that they would be a 'great size' and agreeing with the guy that they would be 'fantastic for ''shoosting'' '. The guy walked away without a pair of skis in his hands after looking determined to have a pair. Not once was it mentioned that maybe his weight might have had something to do with the ski choice (and IMO, the 2 pairs the guy was looking at were far too short).

The worst thing about it was that the guy in the shop was the owner, I reckon with a bit of basic ski knowledge he could have had a sale go through the till.

Ever come across any really bad sales techniques?

I've been in sales for 19 years, so yes - I have come across some awful techniques....

like the life insurance salesman who used to bring out a "toy" coffin and put it on the table

like the life insurance salesman who used to ignore the husband and talk to the wife, and when the husband got annoyed and asked him why, he told him to shut up because he was now dead, and how was she going to cope financially

like the double glazing salesman who was told they would think about it and went to his car and got his sleeping bag and settled down on the sofa, so he could get their answer first thing in the morning

like the insurance salesman who was told they needed to have a think, went to their toilet and told them they had had enough time to think while he was having a wee

Iceman,
I believe it's 'schussing' and it comes from the German 'to shoot' (I may be wrong here, I don't actually know any German other than 'Guten morgan' and I may have spelt that wrong).

It's when you go straight downhill without 'tacking' (O.K. I know this is a ski site), incredibly fast, because you know from the lie of the land that it's quite safe and you can see to the end and stop safely and not frighten or knock over any beginners.

I discovered last month that to be in the correct position for this your elbows have to be in front of your knees, so that your knees can still turn, when you're crouched right down like you're doing squats. In this position you can actually steer and it's amazingly exhilarating.

Tony, what do you sell? (Presumably not coffins or double glazing).

Say it isn't true! I thought that was so I could tell which foot to put each ski on (green to port - or was it starboard?). That would explain why I can only turn left...
