Morning people,
We are due to be driving to Chamonix on the 9th April for the Easter weekend. What I want to know is, has anyone done it? Roughly how long did it take? How much was fuel etc and do you think we will need Snow Chains!!
Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Peace out,
Joeler

only in the summer..took 11 hours via Lille and Luxembourg(less tolls) from the coast ..(1 driver and cheaper fuel in Lux)..I would not think you would need chains unless you go higher..its 660 miles so you can work out the fuel

You should be able to work out the time it will take by looking at theaa.com
Just had a quick look and:
From: Calais, France
To: Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France
Distance: 896.5 km (557.0 miles )
Time: 7 hr 58 min
But of course, this is based on no stopping.
We drive down each year, for Samoens we allow about 16 door to door (from South west, England and including ferry)
Don't know about snow chains for that road though.

I agree with Dids1 it's an 8 hour drive from arrival in France. Add on fuel/meal stops. The road is Autoroute right to Chamonix. We have not needed chains in April, but you should take a pair just in case.
Here's a link to a site where you can search for best fuel prices on your journey...

I drove through Chamonix years ago en route to the adriatic riviera, after having stopped a night in Annecy. All I can remember is Mrs H saying "We're not going up there are we?" as the road climbed up the valley on what appeared to be stilts and nothing else to a good height! That was before the fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel, and I remember there being piles of snow beside the road, and this was early June. It got so hot in the tunnel that all the things on the inside of the windscreen fell off: tax disc holder, parking permit, etc, and the outside temp rose to just over 50c in there. It was also dark and very fumey in there.
