Ok so I am trying to finalise my travel insurance.

I need to insure a family of 4 (nephew has own insurance)

We will be hireing equipment (through skiset for which I have already taken out extra insurance with) We will also be in ski school.

We are not planning on doing anything more dangerous than skiing and toboganning.

So....when I am looking for insurance what exactly is it that I am looking for. When I was searching some compare sight one of them gave me the option of search and rescue, while the others said N/A

Karen, I personally would not choose to use the comparison sites for this as they may not give you enough detail.

Two insurers worth checking out are:

Insure and Go who are caron-a's favourite co

Direct Travel (who offer pretty comprehensive cover for skiers, at very fair prices)

It's really important that you get search and rescue cover, as this is the category that gets you taken care of if you are injured or lost. Costs can be the size of a mortgage if you are not insured.

Also check the small print for the inclusion of Tobogganing, some insurers have the view that it's a pretty dangerous pastime, and they see too many claims.

I use Insure & Go and whilst I've never had to make a claim they are one of the most comprehensive but competitively priced.

In fact I am using them currently for my season in Canada and they cover me for all the additional activities (including snowshoeing, dog sledding, ice skating...) at no extra cost....!

Thanks for your replies. I have checked both insure and go and direct travel. I thought insure and go worked out a bit expensive (well more than direct travel anyway). When I say toboganning I mean sledging. Would this be classeed as the same thing?

I took out extra insurance because I knew we were going to be doing more than skiing. Then found out that all the smow mobiling, ice carting etc all had insurance in the price. I get all my insurance through the Pharmaceutical Society as I have to have extensive public liability insurance and they do deals to all members for travel insurance etc.
Toboganning and sleding usually mean the same thing.
I'm a laydee

You will only ever find out how good your insurance is (or isn't) when it's too late. Seeing how often they reject claims and on what grounds gives an idea as to whether their insurance is worth the paper the documents are printed on.

Ideally find someone who has had a hassle free claim and see who they used.
