I am going to Yllas in Finland on Jan 17th with my husband and 6 year old daughter. The Yllas website reports temperatures as low as -24 this week. We have been warned that it would be colder with the wind and temperatures may be as low as -30. Is skiing possible when it is this cold????

This is my 5th skiing holiday but I have never experienced temperatures this low before! We all have base layers, mid layers and good quality outer ski wear, googles, gloves, hand warmers etc. Has anyone skied in Finland in January and how have you coped with the cold weather?

Sarah

You should be fine. I was in Levi this time last year and it was pretty much the same temps and the snow was great, I would recommend a snood or something for your face though. Have a great time

Hi Skingswell, have you been on the Lapland Forum - dedicated to all things to do with.....Lapland? You'll find lots of skiers here who have been to Finland in January.

I am off to Finland for the first time on Saturday. As Salski says check out the Lapland Forum, lots of info on there.
Lets hope we dont freeze. You can hire thermal suits and boots in resort if you find it too cold. Have fun

Seems everyone is going to Finland on Saturday! I am as well, but unfortunately no skiing for me :(

-20 sounds cold but its fine to ski in as long as you protect your face with a facemask or something. And just hope its not windy

It was minus 12 in St Anton last week with the sun out, and reports of it being minus 45 at the top overnight.
As long as you keep moving and dont sit about for long, you will be fine. Providing of course theres enough skiing to go at )

Have a fantastic time, I am sure you will find the temperature a very dry -30 due to the lack of moisture in the air. If you require any additional info on Yllas PM me I went to the resort 2 seasons ago.

Its wonderful.
