Well for those who know me of old, i usually manage to go on several ski trips a year, and am normally on here day in day out during the ski season. However, as loads of others are finding, this recession has hit us hard....hubby being in property development , and me in advertising, not really best place to be!! So, we both are going to take voluntary redundancy and buggar off to the mountains for a while. The future can wait!! We want to stay in Europe ( family commitments in case we need to get home quick, or would go to Canada) so where is still " reasonably" priced for 2 strong intermediates???? Have looked at maybe going back to Alpe D`huez as only did as a beginner, but any suggestions gratefully received!!!This is so typical when snow conditions are best they`ve been for......er.......a long time!!!

Thnaks in advance, Jobs

Hey Jobster! Good to see you back, but sorry to hear your news - sadly not unfamiliar at the moment.

Ok... a "while" in the mountains? How long is a while?

I reckon you could negotiate self-catered accommodation at a very good rate if you're looking to book something for more than a couple of weeks, especially if you're prepared to live out of resort a bit (e.g. St.Jean de Sixt, or even Annecy - I know you like that area).

To make your Euros go further you could try Italy? They have fabulous snow at the moment - how about basing yourself in Aosta and doing the resorts in the valley? Or The Dolomites - beautiful mountains, great food, reasonable prices and loadsasnow?

Further afield, we hear (here, today!) that beer is €0.80 in Slovakia... just a thought... 8)

Just some ideas... you may not be happy (at the moment) but a while in the mountains ain't so bad...

Looking at taking a month out ( but could be tempted to stay all season!!!), so think you`re right in trying to negotiate a self catering let out of resort.....Only been to Cervinia in Italy and you`re right about prices being better over there, been having a mooch around!!!

Aosta could be a good option as a base, so off to investigate that further.....

Thanks YET again for great advice , I`ll let you know where we decide to go and chillax!!!

It may not be that easy, not everyone is prepared to rent a place for a long time as they want to use it themselves, I know people who rent for all or part of a season and they tend to start looking around the previous summer. There's still signs up around the village with people still looking for places at the moment.

Being based in a valley town sounds a good idea but for a long time the saving in cost is wiped out by transport and lift pass costs. So far this season I've paid only for local season pass and I've not put petrol in the car since sometime early December.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about you're employmrnt situation :(, I think this year is going to be very difficult for many....I think there is a chance my job is not going to be terribly secure over the next three or four months :(.

On the spending a month or even the season in the mountains..good call, life is too short, with excellent conditions and cold temperatures this year is looking good, have you thought about the Tarentaise area, with several resorts in the Valley and beyond it may be worth a look?.

All the best for the future and hope the snow gods smile on you both
