Hi Mary, welcome to j2ski...

I'm pretty sure Arc 2000 has at least one free lift for beginners that serves a Green run of a good length. There are some good long Blues in the same valley if your beginners progress quickly.

Flaine also used to have several free lifts for beginners, as do many other resorts in France; although some are often only serving very short slopes that even the slowest learner will quickly get bored of.

Mary, Les Deux Alpes had at least one free nursery slope in 2007. It was about 50m in length IIRC.

Alpe d'huez has loads of green runs all served by button lifts but they weren't free when we were there two seasons ago.

Tignes le lac has a green and a blue that are free, not sure about val claret.

Many resorts have one or two free lifts for complete beginners but you would generally need to progress to "paid" lifts within a few days. However, for some lifts, you might still get aways without paying for a full lift pass . Some resorts have lifts that you can get "points" cards for - essentially you buy a prepaid card with a set number of points on it. Each time you use the lift you use up some points - very few for very short beginner lifts and more for the slightly longer lifts. These will often get you to about day 4 of your first week and can keep costs down. You will normally find a link to the lift company on the resort website and it is worth checking out the options.

Most tour operators brochures will offer "Learn to Ski specials" which include ski pass, lessons and equipment - these are usually offered in resorts where a pass is only needed for the 2nd half of the week.

alpe d'huez has a cheaper option to the visa alp card, an area lift pass, that works out cheaper. but if want to wonder around see the ice sculptures, visit pic blanc, you will need to pay separetly. Not sure if its the best option, I have paid for the visa alp which gives you acess to the pool and ice rink
