At the risk of keeping admin busy with his shears...
I've often read quite a lot of strong opinions of french people/resorts on the forum. I thought it might be nice for anyone considering a french resort for the first time to hear a different view [seeing as we're a friendly bunch :D].
I used to be extremely ignorant about french people and wouldn't even visit the country. A few years back I was persuaded by friends to go to the dordogne and we've never looked back.
I've since visited 3 french ski resorts, Paris and the south of France. I can hand on heart say that my experiences have been wonderful. I've encountered 90+% extreme friendliness/helpfulness and, most notably, any return visit to a restaurant / shop / bar, etc has had staff jumping through hoops backwards.
I'm wondering, is it because I go out of my way to be friendly, courteous and speak to them in their language as much as possible (which isn't much believe me!) or am I just lucky? A member of my family treats the french with contempt and disdain and, in return, receives the same treatment. No surprises there!
It is expensive, I'll give you that and I don't doubt that people have had bad experiences, but can't that be said of anywhere in the world?
phew! so pleased I got that off my chest. now, what time's kick off?

and I forgot to mention their charisma!
a sweeping generalisation that is completely untrue. I have been to france more than any other country and I love it. Are all English jingositic lager louts, all americans stupid and all irish alcoholics?

funny you should pose this question,i was only thinking of doing the same.
a friend of mine has this anti french attitude, which i find a bit bemusing.
i've been to france about 6 times skiing plus a couple of trips to paris, and
i cant recall any problems whatsoever.(apart from the beer prices)

Oui, je pense ce la .... ermm
Well I think that it doesn't matter where you go, there are lovely interesting people.
On the occasions that my OH and I travel through la France, we make a point of going at least one way cross country, ie avoiding autoroutes.
So you get to see the old way of life, old farmhouses, chateaus, unbeatable architecture. In Paris there are some of the world's best paintings. In general, the food is varied but interesting. Varied, by region.
The attitude to life is different from that in the UK, but who is to say, right/wrong. The French people are, like the Scots, a proud race. If you are rude to the French, then you deserve the baton that is shoved up your derriere.
Coming to skiing, there are two minuses, lack of village architecture, and the mountain costs, ie food and drink. The pluss points are, ski in/ski out, good lift systems, big mountains.
I love Austria for it's old village feeling, and friendlyness, I like Switzerland for it's big mountains, Italy because they love families, mais Vivre la France!
