Re:Monte Rosa tragedy

Tony_H posted Aug-2008

Just read this on the news:

"In the Italian Alps, a guide found two bodies on the Monte Rosa peak in the Aosta region, at an altitude of 13,000 feet on Saturday. Authorities said the victims, a man from the Netherlands and another man from Britain, apparently froze to death during a storm that hit the mountain on Friday."

It seems the weather has been terrible right across Europe. It seems to me like the phrase Global Warming definitely needs to be amended to Climate Change.

Sad news indeed.

Tony,
The Canadian late news last night showed pictures of a recent snow storm in Colorado!! Cars off the road and stuck.

Let's vote Global Warming a "no-show" !!

Firstly...my thoughts go out to the families of the climbers who lost their lives...

On the Global Warming/Climate Change debate..i have just returned from Bourg-Saint-Maurice where the glaciers are looking better than they have for years in the area, and during the past week the highest peaks of the region have all had fresh snow.

Global Warming....someone ,somewhere is making a lot of money preaching very biased statistics without giving te full facts and figures.

It's probably more likely they're tearing their hair out in frustration, one of the predicted effects of global warming was a weakening and deflection the jet stream. That's just what's happened since the 1990's, this year and last the jet stream was pushed onto the continent giving one half of Europe the storms you're talking about and the other heat waves, all predicted ahead of time and reported in at least some newspapers.

The glaciers might look pretty in the last week or so but you need to go up on them and look at the actual snow depths. The Glacier du Pissaillas for example, on your doorstep in Bourg, has closed early for skiing as temperatures hit 20'c and the snow melted.

Driving up the road leading to the Fox Galcier, South Island, New Zealand, there is a sign marking the head of the glacier in 1924.

Four miles later, you reach the head of the Glacier. The hotel built beside the glacier in the 70's, is already half a mile below the glacier.

Global warming is in evidence. The question is the degree of that which is man-made, and that which is an oscilatory process.

Ise makes a very good point about the jet stream.

In North America, you watch it every day on the weather forecast in autumn, winter and spring. It totally governs what the weather will be and is very unpredictable. It's like a giant syne wave looping around the Northern hemisphere. The oscillations vary in magnitude and position. It can stall in one place or dance around. This means that although climate change may have influence on the jet stream, the results are still not very predictable because the jet stream has always had a mind of it;s own. That is, it may move to a position where it will make an area unseasonable cold and another area unseasonable hot. It makes no difference to the overall warming trend.

During the winter, I like it in the Tuesday position above. I'll steal all the cold from Pav that I can get.

It is awful when things like this happen.

As far as global warming goes. We have had ice ages, and we have had super hot humid weather. Perhaps this is just a phase
Uh oh, I think I broke'd the lift

I noticed the stuff about the jet stream last year, because it was running in a different position to the normal across GB, which they claimed was affecting the weather.

I think the point about extremes of weather is very valid, because what we are witnessing are very hot spells of weather, and violent storms with high winds. One extreme to the other.

I dont claim to know much about how all the weather works, but whilst global warming or climate change is happening, it does not necessarily mean it is getting "hotter" all the time.
