Right then, I'm a fairly seasoned boarder but I don't pay too much attention to details and the small print....

What's the deal with edge angles? I've seen edge sharpening tools that vary from 85 thru to 90 degrees. Is there much difference? What is optimum for which kind(s) of boards/conditions/riding styles?

Educate me....

In brief

There are two angles or bevels to worry about, the edge and the base.

Base angle determines how the edge will catch by accident or engage on purpose. Commonly 0.5 or 1.0 degrees. The more you carve, the less bevel you need. What might work great for carving steeps would be a pain in the bumps. Freestyle might need more bevel.

Side angle determines how the edge will cut into the snow (or ice). Commonly 89.0 to 88.0 degrees and 87.0 to 86.0 for carving and racing.

A 1.0 degree base bevel and a 1.0 degree side bevel will yeild a 90 degree overall angle. This would be good for most skiers/boarders. giving good performance, but requiring little maintenance.

Most important, and especially as edge angles become more acute is to check edges for damage and burrs. These are easily removed with a pocket diamond file.
