Hi, we are a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 children aged 11 9 and 6 going to Kransgora, Slovenia in January for a week skiing. Booked through First Choice, should we pay for Learn to Ski Package altogether costing £916.00 for 6 days? Should we have a few lessons at home first or just go for it? Lessons at home cost a small fortune too! Not sure which way to go? Appreciate any skiing advice too!

Although it is cheaper to book the 6-day package prior to your trip it is not always necessary.
Some people pick it up easily and do not require the full 6 days; others need 2-3 days to understand the basics and then progress under their own steam.
Some even hate it after day 1....

In most ski resorts there are multiple ski schools offering reasonably priced lessons; you can then buy as needed. It is perhaps optimum to book a couple of days' lessons initially - it then leaves you flexible.

Lessons in the UK do cost an absolute fortune - it's horrific what they charge. Only throw this cash away if you have pots of it.... you can almost have another holiday for the money they charge....

UK lessons even on fake snow and not dry slopes are so different to the real deal that I would say don't bother! It is so different to skiing on real snow and it may even put you off. Just head over with an open mind and the extra cash in your wallet!!

I know I bang on about this, but...

YOU CANNOT OVERSTATE THE VALUE OF HAVING PROPER LESSONS IN RESORT.

Snow-dome instructors over here do some crazy things (so I hear) and charge a fortune for it.

Trying to teach yourself would be equally mad and possibly quite dangerous too. So please, do it properly and you will get maximum enjoyment from this wonderful sport.

Speaking from my own experience having learnt only 2 seasons ago at age 39, the ski in a day package at Milton Keynes was invaluable to me. I then made 3 other visits just free skiing practising what I had been taught before hitting the slopes that New Year for the first time. I then had 2, 3 hour lessons in that week and a couple last year and will continue that route for the next few at least.

I have perhaps taken to it quite naturally/easily and going into my first lesson the season just gone, the instructor thought I had at least 8 weeks skiing under my belt from first assessment to gauge where to pitch the lesson, instead of the 10 days on mountain to that point!

Would deffinately echo the private lessons are important, as my technique has improved so much allowing me to ski further and longer before the legs start to tire and most importantly with confidence and control!

In contrast my OH learnt in resort last year and she wouldn't have it any other way, she didn't want to do the MK ski in a day or other lessons incase it put her off!!

6 days of group lessons in Couchevel last February has given her so much confidence that she wants to go again, unfortunately for my wallet back to Couchevel, spoilt her to early!!!

Yeah Skidaddle is spot on!! Sure many others would agree as well. Skiers who teach themselves put themselves and everyone else in danger, skiing with no real control and although they may be able to make it down the mountain quickly, they have no idea how they are doing it!!

As above.

I'd still take lessons on a dry slope or one of the snowdomes (preferably a snowdome if there is one within reach!), may be a lot worse than proper mountain skiing but the principles are the same. Spend a day mastering stopping and turning here in the UK, and thats an otherwise wasted day saved when you are out in resort!! Means you get more time on the real runs and more proper learning time!!
