When I was in Austria in March I notice at a few bike frames with skies on them instead of wheels for going downhill in the snow. I've never seem anyone use them before. They were sitting next to the hut/building where you got the chair lift back up the mountain

Anyone experienced going down hill on one? Are they any good?

They are ski-bobs swal. They are generally used by nursing wet maids, public schoolboys, any pensioner who has both grandparents still alive, and snowboarders with bad knees.

When I worked in Niederau, they were a minor rage, and there was always one ski-bob class a week. The punishment for not performing well during early morning instructor training was to be the ski-bob lehrer. I copped for it one week and took so much stick from my colleagues. My attentiveness during training went up to 100% thereafter.

This went on until a Kiwi guy turned up who actually liked riding the ski-bob. Turned out he fell into one of the categories above.

I'm sure I have a b&w photo somewhere.... but you are not getting to see it.

They were quite popular in the Paradiski area this season. Never tried them myself.

They don't have the mobility, flexibility, applications that skis and boards have.

They may be fun for an afternoon but I'd rather be on skis.

I had my first go on one of these snowscoots (http://www.snowscoot.com) yesterday and loved it! Totally different experience to skiing/boarding and a great new way of getting down the mountain. Just been in contact with the guys at Insane Toys about buying one and they are offering a very good end of season 50% discount on their new rigs!

I guess it would be a natural choice if you ride BMX.
