Fairly new to skiing and have been to Borovets, Bulgaria for the last 2 years. Don't want to go there again as it's dirty, runs are limited and dodgy Bulgarians are forever trying to rip you off. Also the resort controllers 'Borosport' is in the pocket of the local mafia so profits (which must be substantial judging by the 2 fold increases in prices since last year) are creamed and not reinvested in any meaningful way.
Can anyone make any useful suggestions on skiing in Central Europe?
I am a recreational skier from the UK and am looking (aren't we all)for decent snow, a reasonably priced resort and not too far from the airport. I'm not into challanging downhill stuff but like really long steady senic runs. I think they call it ski surfing!!!!
Any suggestions appreciated
Thank You

Hello MrCrazy....
I live in Slovakia, at the town that serves Jasna ski resort. It is the largest ski area in Central Europe with 17 lifts and about 27 km of piste; with LOTS of off-piste. The scenery is fantastic and the prices are very good value. An evening meal will cost between £3 and £7. The Slovaks haven't the greedy Bulgar mentality.
There are plenty of websites giving more info about Jasna and the surrounding area.
Pls feel free to contact me for more info...

Hello,
Grand Massif is a good bet. It's made up of 5 villages, Samoens, Flaine, Morillon, Les Carroz and Sixt. At least Flaine is not a village, but a purpose built resort. Not very good looking but skiing fits all your requirements.
We've been to Samoens 5 times in last few years. It's beautiful village, set in the valley floor at 800m so can be wet when it's snowing up high.
It takes about 30 mins to ski over to Flaine where you get lovely long reds and blues. Les Carroz is my fave but Morillon good too.
The Grand Massif is great for a short break being close to motorway and Geneva.
France is not cheap though and the mountains restaurants are not great. We've started taking a filled baguette out and enjoying the scenery.
Good luck!
Bryan.

Forget France - go to Austria. Nice people, varied skiing, charming resorts, good value (if you avoid the hi brow places like Lech).
I would recommend Mayrhofen, but am going to be trying Bad Gastein next season, as it looks excellent.
A friend has been to Saalbach a number of times, and says it great, and lots of people swear by Niederau too.
I am off to Verbier Saturday, have never done Switzerland before, so will report back on that soon.
I also really like Italy, but have only ski'd in Sauze d'Oulx which is brilliant skiing if you get enough snow! I really want to try the Dolomites soon, Val Gardena in particular.
Also, I am being persuaded that Jasna in Slovakia is worth a trip, good investment in the lifts, large enough ski area, and incredible value for money. Theres a bloke posts on here who runs a chalet out there.
As for what you said about Bulgaria, I said exactly the same thing a few months ago, but was shot down in flames by a few for saying it. That was based on people I know who had been and found the experience exactly as you have. As much as I have a desire to explore Eastern Europe, going to Bulgaria in particular and skiing there is a non starter for me for the reasons you gave so clearly.
Good luck, do let us know where you choose.

Suggestions for France: La Clusaz, Megeve, Les Contamines, St Gervais, La Rosiere.
For Italy: Cervinia, Pila, Cormayeur, Santa Caterina
For Austria: Mayrhofen, Zell am See, Lech
Heaps of choice, time to define what you want from your resort.
