Hi Guys

Just back from La Plagne with hubby and friends, but have the next girly trip to plan for 2 weeks time. Was disappointed that the chair between La Plagne and Les Arcs is shut for the season as it has broken, as I wanted to ski Les Arcs. Has anyone been to Les Arcs and is it a good place for two 30 something girls who want to get in the miles and enjoy good food and wine in the evening??? Any help appreciated as we are leaving on 19th Jan, so short on time!!! If you don`t rate Les Arcs, any alternatives appreciated!
A bad day on the slopes is better than a good day in the office !

Once or twice...

Les Arcs is a simply fantastic ski area. I get the impression you've got a few miles under your skis, so I reckon you'll love it.

It has one of the biggest verticals in The Alps; from the Aiguille Rouge down to Villaroger, Black and Red, drops you 2000m over a distance of about 8-10km (I think!). Not too difficult but will burn the thighs!

There are serious Blacks, long Blues and Reds and a lot of off-piste available (exercise care as always).

Highlights? Most all of the 1950/2000 valley, on and off the piste... pretty runs among the trees over at Peisey / Vallandry, Bois de l'ours, Genepi and Comborciere Blacks, blasting on the long fast Blues of 1600, and lunch at Le Ferme in Villaroger.

And possibly the most bizarre run in the Alps (assuming they haven't yet sanitized it); from the top of the Comborciere chair, take the Malgovert (also known as "The Hobbit" to veterans of Optimumski) toward 1600. Marked as a red but wouldn't be a marked run anywhere else. If you can link two turns without falling or giggling you're doing well...

Oh, and don't miss the "tart huts"; about half a dozen shacks around the mountain that serve a range of savoury and sweet flans and tarts - great for snacking on the run and sitting on your skis in the sun...

Hmm, now I've written that I want to be there...

Fantastic!!That is the most comprehensive summary of a resort I`ve ever had! Yeah, have some cheeky miles under the old skis so would like to add some more this season...red run, unmarked, giggles...sounds perfect! Been offered an apartment in 1950 and one in 1800....where would you stay, as I`m off to book!!!

Les Arcs is great, i am off to La Plagne on friday and was hoping for a day visit over so its a shame that the express has closed.

I was in les arcs last year and I wished I stayed in 1950 rather than 1800. 1950 is a lot prettier generally.

1800 is a bit bleak but there are still enough bars to enjoy a drink. Found most people scurry back to their self catered chalets after a couple of apres drinks and then come out later for the night when it really livens up.

Some good live music can be found usually starting around 9pm. Look out at the posters.

There are some great runs, some nice easy red and some tasty difficult blacks. The snow park was well maintained when i was there.

Wherever you stay, you should have a great skiing definately.

What was the condition lower down at La Plagne when you left?

Admin Fancy forgetting the Grand Col area :D
Another vote for Malgovert, it's great fun :D

jobster Arc 1950 of the two, as it's quite new.
There is also a good restaurant just above Arc 2000, called Chalets d'l Arcs ( I think) quite new, very, very good food. The loos play a recording of cows mooing

Conditions in La Plagne were generally good. All runs down were open and whilst in places it was getting slightly " brown", you could still choose your line to avoid the dodgy parts. They had some snow when we were leaving so this should have helped conditions, but overall, it was pretty good for this time of year, and the snow was soft, not wet, and not overly icy....It has been bitterly cold there tho with temps down at -24 with wind chill, so take plenty of woolies!! Thanks for advice on Les Arcs, just off to book now,,in fairness the apartment in 1950 is better than the one in 1800, so that has swayed me even more!

1950 - some of the best piste skiing in the world passes your door (well, almost).

 ...nah, just keeping it to myself..

But you're right - some great steeps up there (IIRC). Memories of a wild day after yomping up and dropping over the back of the Col with some of the Optimum peeps too. Needed new underwear after that one...
