As I understand, the smoking ban was due to take place 01/01/08??
I am due out next week to La Plagne and wondered if anyone knew if the french were taking the ban seriously or is it blatently being ignored (like the spanish!)

The official ban on smoking in bars and restaurants starts on 1 Feb, but I've noticed that here in Chamonix and Les Houches many places put up their no-smoking signs from the beginning of the season.

Hi. I live in France and the smoking ban took effect from 1 January 2008. They are taking it seriously - fines of Euro 450 are being given out if your disregard it. I do not know about La Plagne but I suspect that it will be the same.

I'm surprised the French haven't had a strike yet, or barricaded the ports until they get their own way
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Owners were given a 24 hour grace period so the law became effective as of midnight on the 1st/2nd. It seems to be working as the bar owners are afraid of the potential fines they will get.
Great news..........

Hi the ban is being adhered to totaly.
we were a small local bar where chain smoking is a sport and the change was staggering mind you the patron had a right cob on. Other bars and restaurants were the same.
