This is my first time to Austria and from reading up some sites, I am wondering if the below is workable and reasonable? I'm still in the beginning of my trip-planning and would appreciate any comments from anyone for this trip (beginners/intermediate skiers):
Feb 8-16, 2008
Fly into Salzburg then to Mayrhofen for skiing.
1: Should i stay maybe 4 days at each place (sight-seeing vs ski school? which should i head to first?
2: Are trains frequent enough to travel from Salzburg to Mayrhofen daily? (Hv not booked ski resorts there yet)
3: Would it be wise to spend all 4 days in ski school? or does it come in a daily package?
Appreciate help from all! ) Happy Holidays!

I don't know too much about the trains from Salzburg to Mayrhofen but I know that it's a good couple of hours by car between the two so if you were planning to commute daily then you'll be missing out on a lot of time on the slopes. There are a lot of resorts a lot closed to Salzburg than Mayrhofen. Have a look on the 'Airports' tab towards the top of this page to see some of the estimated transfer times between the various airports and resorts.
Good Luck!

Hi
I do this trip once a year and its dead easy!
SAlzburg to Mayrhofen is 2.5 hours at the most on the train and you change once at Jenbach, getting on the little valley train which takes you to Mayrhofen. There are at least 5 trains per day, quite probably several more than that.
If I were you I'd have two days skischool. There are 4 to choose from, but the one I know best is Schiscule SMT. They have a fantastic reputation and you can book by the day.
Good luck - pm me if you want to know more!!

whilst I'm sure the train ride is very scenic an' all, as you said you were still in the trip-planning stages would it not make more sense to fly into Innsbruck if you want to go to Mayrhofen :?: The transfer is much shorter, which means more time on the snow
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Agreeing with freezywater, but you might have picked up the subliminal message ~ why are you faffing about with Salzburg. It is winter. Go skiing for every minute you can in Austria. Go to Salzburg in the spring/summer/autumn, it is beautiful.
