All,

Reading so many posts, reviews and tales of skiing in general I am interested to understand what the general consensus is on the meaning of the term “aggressive” particularly when applied to skis?

Most recently our good friend and constant source of worthy input “freezywater” recounted a tale about a beginner, stating that “his top of the range skis were too aggresive(sic).”

Now forgive me, but surely a ski is not capable of expressing such a high level function as aggression! So, what is the concept that is being expressed by so many people? I have my own ideas about what the motivation is behind this phrase but would welcome others input.

Happy tautology,

Jan

Aggressive probably means fast or difficult to control.
It's only a slope.

I think skis only become aggresive if you let them. If you stay ahead of them, think faster than them, react quicker than them and most importantly, remind them who paid for them then they'll act like a couple of puppy dogs.

If though, just for one split second, you drop your guard then aggresive skis will quite literaly jump up and bite you on the arse.

My Salomon Streeracer 10's are probably not so much aggresive, but more 'fiesty'. They still enjoy making sure you are paying them full attention every once in a while.

That's the term I was looking for.
It's only a slope.

So are we ascribing spouse-like properties to our skis now?

If you'll pardon the pun, it seems like a slippery slope from here ...

You may delay, but time will not.

Well. . . When we talk about sandpaper we refer to more aggressive grades as the ones with "larger" grits. They take material off more quickly. If not used carefully, it can cause damage. :)

Or maybe like putting a 5 degree edge bevel on my skis - sure some people might "need" something like that, but it would cut too "aggressively" for me. I would probably ski in circles!! Or die!

One more idea for you: Aggressive meaning designed to be pushed hard(pushes back HARD!); if you don't have the strength or ability to make the ski flex - it won't turn effectively.
