I am sure you have not noticed that one skier has been "silent" for some time!
He contributed greatly in making this site the "thinking skier" site with his many messages.

He needs your help now!

I am sure you middle aged men will identify with his "situation"!

As skiers at one point have said, "that is it,,I am going to move to a ski resort. Change my life!" Well he did.

Changed countries, changed life styles and even is getting a "new" member of his family in December! He has been getting ready for this new "member" for the past two-three weeks. At middle age it is not so easy, plus he did not have much previous experience in this area!

All sorts of "problems" crop up! New technologies to master, the rooms have to be ready, the food situation has to be fixed. Of course all the "invitations" have to be sent! In short he is exhausted by the end of the day! (and the door is yet not fixed, that light switch needs work etc.....)

So fellow skiers on this site I ask you to provide psychological, social and emotional support to Jan! Send via PM all sorts of positive messages! Send to him suggestions if you have done this "middle-aged" change! I am sure he feels alone now !

Let me be the first to tell him that I think often of his new life and the courage it took to "make the move".
December will come soon. The "baby" will be fine and in a couple of years it will not seem so bad!

There is a baseball movie in which a man builds an old fashion baseball park so that "older" players can play! The famous saying in this movie is, "built it and they will come". So it is in skiing!

And they will come!!!

great analogy, I think the film you refer to is Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner, from memory though the 'older' players that came were in fact 'ghosts' so older as in dead :!:

I'm not certain but I'd guess that Jan would prefer guest of the 'alive' variety as they tend to be able to pay their way.

Jan - all the best I'm sure it will be a great success and I envy you tremendously (note to self, keep pestering wife to move to Austria.... )
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Freezywater,

Have you seen Matrix movie? What is real and what is cyber-generated "identities".
This fellow Jan,,,the verdict is not yet out on him!

We hear this and that but is he really skiing or just hiding in the local pub to avoid all the work?

Is it a ghost or is real real! Many years from now skiers will read these lines floating in cyberspace and argue if Pavel really existed or perhaps he is a "cyber creation" made up by Dave!

After reading some of my "free" adventures you will also wonder!

So until I get a "notorized" document stating that Jan was seen skiing.......

He does like to "twik" our minds!

Thank you,,it is Field of Dreams. We shall call his Fields of snow!

Hey guys,

Thanks for taking the time and effort to send your thoughts it’s really appreciated :)

Pav's right that there's lots to do but somehow I always find time to come on here and mumble about something :|

One thing I've noticed since moving here is that everyone says - "Oh you're so lucky" Well that's possibly true but I think it was Arnold Palmer who said - "It's a funny thing, the more I practice the luckier I get" ...

From my perspective the distance from England to Austria is about 1000Km, however to some people this is an infinite distance. Good friends of mine say to me “Oh I am thinking about making a move out to the mountains” or “You know what? I’m thinking about selling up and sailing around the world” but every year they find some really good reason why they can’t do it “Just at the moment”. What they mean is that they have weighed up the issues and would rather stay in their comfort zone than step out into the world and “be lucky” …

Some reasons that I’ve heard for not swapping an unfulfilling life for a dream include:

Well you see the kids are too young
Well you see the kids are too old
Well you see the kids not born yet
Well you see I’m hoping for a promotion later this year
Well you see it’s “End of Year” for our department, but after that …
Well actually I quite like the M25 / M4 / M6 / M8 …
Well I just need some time to think things over.

You get the idea.

So what’s my message?

I think Warren Miller sums it up when he says: “If you don’t go out and live your dreams today, you’ll be another day older when you do!”

Well enough of this, the snow is piling up outside and I gotta go play :D

Thanks again for your support and if I can be of help …

Jan

Great words, Jan. I have been "thinking about" moving abroad and making a change to my life for a few years, but there has always been the excuse of getting the kids through education, so that during that period they have a home to base themselves, as moving abroad for me would be lock, stock and barrel, with no place back in the UK to return to.

Also, what would I do? I am not 40 yet, and dont want to do it in 25 years to retire, but I have only experience in sales in 2 industries, so what would I do, as I would need an income. Run a bar, guest house, cafe? So much to consider. I even thought about launching my own skiing magazine, having had experience of many years in print, and that would definitely be possible from anywhere in the world (with broadband).

But for many people its something of a gamble. Sounds like you had choices to make too, but everyone has their own issues to deal with.

Best of luck to you, and once I have decided where to actually go, somewhere affordable, I may well follow you. I can think of nothing better than getting away from the M25, M1, M62, M6, along with my local inner city centre which has become a breeding ground for gangs and criminals. Best not start off on a political rant though.....

All the best.
