3 adults are planning to travel Italy before skiing in Hintertux (or perhaps other places with good snow) in late Feb 08.

How do we get to Hintertux from Venice, by train/bus?

Are there better places than Hintertux which will have high hit rate of good snow fall?

Well, Hintertux is at the top end of the Ziller valley, and there is always snow there. But at the end of Feb you should also be skiing mainly in Mayrhofen, and with any luck Zell am Ziller too.

I believe you can make the short trip through the Brenner Pass, and I would imagine there is a transport link from Venice to Innsbruck or Salzburg. However, there are good rail links to Mayrhofen, via Jenbach. I would probably take a car over the Brenner myself, if you dont mind the drive.

Thank you very much for your reply.

My friend from London always goes there so we would go to Hintertux even if there might be better places in late Feb.

How long would it take to drive from venice ?

That, my friend, is not something I would have a clue about, but I do know Brenner is thye shortest link between North East Italy and Austria, and a stunning drive too.

just had a quick look on viamichelin.co.uk, they reckon just under 5 and a half hours to travel the 470kms from Venice to Hintertux, and as Tony_H says, a cracking drive. Have a good one!!
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Hi, Yum

We drove from Mayrhofen ( about 20 minutes from Hintertux ) to Venice in Summer 2004. We went up through the Gerlos pass: I recall the trip took about six hours, but it was a very windy( lots of hairpin bends, not gusty! ) road and I think that we went the pretty way.
I recommend Rail Europe if you want to go by train. They are very helpful; fares can be booked a maximum of 12 weeks in advance, if you get the limited discount seats when they are first released they are surprisingly cheap.
I would be amazed if there wasn't good snow at the Hintertux as there was skiing in August!
Enjoy your trip
Good wishes,
Mary

Yup, we made a day trip back in August. Shorts in the valley with a blizzard up top. But even here global warming raises its ugly head. We saw tarpaulins spread around protecting the snow.
It's only a slope.

Thanks, everyone, for giving me useful info. It's still few months away but I am already excited about this, especially coming from down under!

Now, which website would be the best for me to get a good feel for how to get there, tain route, fares etc?
