I've just aquired three pairs of very elderly and very long skis. One pair is a set of Salomon S9000 circa 1990. I've no idea what the base is made of but it don't look like ptex! It's got coloured speckles in it (a very fetching shade of mint green I might add).

I was going to practice a spot of waxing on some of these skis but I'm now concerned at the amount of damage these skis look like they are capable of doing to my waxing iron

You have a treasure. Those Salomon S9000 are the very first skis made by Salomon. The also changed the way skis are made since it was the first "monocoque" ski.

Keep it since it will have great value soon. It is a classic.

Before Ptex?

Well it was painted bases.

Before that in the pre-1900s it was bare wood!

As a member of the 'carver only' generation, I'm half tempted to clean them up and take them on Holiday one year just to see what it's like to ski with such long skis - but then again, I'd need a longer ski bag too.

Perhaps it's safer to stick with my carvers

OK, so what was pre-monocoque?

As Christians we have this cultural reference; Before Christ ( BC) and After Christ (AD)!

As skiers we also have these "reference" points!

Ha the "before Monocoque days", life was simpler.

It was the "stratified sandwich" ski core in which the great techno revolution was if the layers were at 30 degrees or 60 degrees!
The top layer was just for show.

Now the top layer is what makes the difference.

First it was the "cherry" at the tip by Dynastar. The famous anti-vibration cherry!

Then it was the Rossi VAS plates at top.

The top ski now is the strength of the ski as much as the ski core. The marvel of all of this is the top ski edges. Take a look at them!

Rarely do they delaminate yet look at the surface and stress factors. That is the great secret of the modern ski and that Salomon you have started it all!

It is a keeper!

So far I've found a Salomon corporate timeline with a picture of them and even seen some new limited edition carvers for sale all painted up in the S9000 orange colour scheme! I'm quite chuffed with them. The skis I have are the P7 3S versions with the pixy ear tips - slalom version apparently and still over 200cms!!!!

The timeline also mentions the Salomon Prolink skis with external shock absorbtion - got some of those too!

Not bad for £15 including a third pair of not soo famous fischers.

Any idea what bindings would have been on the S9000s? It would be quite nice to try get a pair for them.

Answering my own threads again! On closer inspection of the 3rd pair of skis I bought (Fischers), the bindings fitted were Salomon 957 composites in the same colour scheme as the S9500 so I'm assuming they were the ones originally fitted to the s9500s. Either way they are now!

You are in luck.

I have in my garage such a pair!
Yes red and orange!

Now let us see how you can earn them?

Give me a week to consider a "acceptable" exchange rate for these bindings!
