Hi all,

I am a newbie to this forum and would like some info please. We are a family of 2 adults and four children 10,13,16,16. We have always planned to go on a family skiing holiday until I snapped 3 of the 4 ligaments in my knee last year. Can anyone recommend somewhere in europe which is good for beginner skiers and good for sightseeing also (because I won't be skiing). My partner and I went to Andorra in 1999 but although the bars and restaurants were good there wasn't much to look at other than snow which was great when I could ski but not much good to me now. Austria sounds nice but can anyone recommend anywhere?

Thanks in advance

Shell.

Hi Michelle,

If you or your husband are prepared to hire a car I think it will extend your options a lot - and you could take a look at La Clusaz for starters. It's an easy half-hour drive from Annecy, which has a medieval "old town" beside a beautiful lake and is quite possibly one of the prettiest places in Europe. There's a good range of modern shops as well as great eateries, etc.

La Clusaz itself is a good family resort and a proper town but probably not big enough on its own to keep a non-skier busy for a week.

In fact, you could even stay in a hotel in Annecy and have your family drive out to a different ski resort each day (there are dozens within an hours drive).

Our local La Clusaz expert (who seems to be spending too much time out skiing, and not enough time on the Internet lately (;^) ) can maybe tell you more about the non-skiing options.

Michelle, sorry to hear about your injury but glad to hear that you're still up for a skiing holiday. I am biased because we have a chalet in La Rosiere but I believe it would tick all the boxes as far as your requirements as concerned. It's a super reosrt for learning to ski, it's high and snow sure, the slopes are south facing so it gets maximum exposure to the sun. The pistes are mostly blue and reds, they're above the tree line so they are wide and long, great for practising and you're not stuck in the village on beginners slopes for days on end.
The views are some of the best in the Alps, we can see at least 11 peaks over 3,00 metres in the view from our chalet but like all ski resorts it's really centred around the skiing although there is a spa and fitness centre as well as the usual shops and restuarants. If you're up to walking there are a variety of guided tours around the locale, some of which use snowshoes to get to places that you couldn't reach wearing ordinary shoes or boots.
Why not have a look at our website www.tracksvacations.com it will give some idea of what a chlet holiday can be.

As soon as my knees give out (which should be any day now!), I'll be back in front of the computer again

Obviously I would just like to second all that Powderhound said about La Clusaz and Annecy. We regularly have non-skiers staying here with us and none have gone home disappointed. Besides the multitude of local bars and restaurants in the village itself, there's a swimming pool with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, ice rink (if your knees are up to it) and a host of snowshoe or cross-country ski trails which will be much kinder on your knees.

Mind you, I think that a lot of people forget that they don't have to do something on every day of a chalet holiday and sometimes taking the opportunity of chilling out in the chalet in front of the fire with a good book or DVD should not be overlooked. :)

Feel free to PM me if you need any more info on La Clusaz or our holiday offerings.

Hi Michelle

Sorry to hear about your knee.

Try Maria Alm it's on the Salzburg side of Austria, you can fly in with Ryan Air prety cheaply.

Maria Alm is a hidden Gem, very picturesque great for begginers but not too challenging for advanced skiers.

Loads to do there from the Rodelbahns, the sleigh Rides, visits to Salzburg and general shopping and looking around Maria Alm itse'f as well as some very pretty nearby towns / villages.

I was there myself New year 2005/2006 had a great time but the skiing was not challenging enough if it wasn't for that we would have returned this New Year just gone.

I can reccomend a place to stay as well. Please see below

Alpengasthof-Hotel Annerlhof
Alfred Rohrmoser
Schattberg 28
A.5761 Maria Alm
Tel.0043-(0)6584/22948

Fantastic Service and very central and pretty cheap as well.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Max
