Hi
I'm hoping someone out ther can help me. I've just got back from a lovely holiday in Austria. Myself and my wife both ski a little bit and have boots that are fitted with heat molded insoles and that are fitted professionally. On this holiday my wife was unable to ski as she had crippling pain in her calves. She's a tough cookie my wife but we had tears mid run while she waited for the pain to ease enough to ski down the mountain. No one has been able to give us an answer as to why this has happened.
I need to know if anyone can suggest anything that we can change as we are going away again in 6 weeks.
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Rik

Calf extension exercises should help I do them every day for a few weeks before I go.
Are you regular skiers or new to the sport??

Skiing is not the sort of activity which should put massive strain on your calves. Having said that I agree with above, doing lots of standing raises making sure you go through whole range and hold at each end will definitely help your fitness. Other questions might be:-
1) With modern boots you only need a relatively thin pair of specialist ski socks, how many was your wife wearing?
2) If you are wearing thermal leggings make sure they do not go past the top of your socks. I always put a fold in mine around knee area to ensure they stop above sock. Only thing going in my boot is a nice smooth sock and absolutely nothing else.
Really sounds to me that to be getting such pain you have effectively cut off circulation to lower leg.

Is your wife a runner, mine is and she has calf problems and it took a while to find boots that suited. Apparently these distance runner girlies have larger than normal calfs.

How tight does she pull power straps? Sometimes when these are pulled too tight they cut off circulation which puts strain on calves. I do get aching calves but only after my first couple days of skiing, a bit of stretching usually helps and I am fine for the rest of the season. But I feel it only after skiing not during.
