If I'm getting single trip insurance I try to buy it as soon as I've booked the holiday, so I'm covered in case I become ill.

It very much depends on how long ,multi trip etc. BUT check you are insured not only for medical but also to get you off the slopes. Not all cover for this and it can cost thousands.

Nationwide do free winter sports with flexplus account which costs £10 a month, also includes european breakdown and recovery. It's what I use, might be worth you having a look.

I am just about to conclude with MPI. The main reasons for choosing them:
1) They have covered a series of medical issues, without addition to the premium, or excess. (Be certain to declare any medical issues you may have had in the past year).
2) They cover off piste skiing, and do not require the presence of a qualified guide or instructor.
3) The annual multi-trip policy, including winter sports covers up to 31 days per trip. The normal maximum is 17 days, and in many years this is insufficient for us. They also offer cover for seasonaires.
4) The cost was reasonable. Having said that, it is much more important to get a policy that meets the needs.
5) The owner is a keen and regular skier, and when you speak to the people, the discussions seems geared to common sense.

Ok cheers ill have a look at them. Good point about the off the slopes cover, not thought of that. We are low intermediates so shouldn't need any off piste cover just yet. Well I hope not anyways

Don't leave insurance until the last moment. It's there to cover injury/illness leading to cancellation too.
