Hi - new to this forum but enjoyed reading previous posts. Ski most Christmas with family and a week at end of January (with a group of 25!)for the past 10 years and been nearly all over Austria. As we didn't make it this Christmas we are going to Chamonix next week for 3 nights - I was last in Chamonix when I had only skied a couple of times and found it quite daunting - looking forward to going back now that I'm more of an intermediate. I know its not the easiest place to move around ski areas. We should be able to ski Wednesday afternoon when we arrive - anyone have ideas of where best to ski for afternoon other tips would be most appreciated -)

If you have only a few hours in the afternoon, then just remember that you don't need a big area. You also do not want to waste any ski time travelling to the slopes. I would simply pick whichever area is most convenient to your accommodation/hire shop and get going .

btw, do check with the lift pass company to see if there is a time when they will let you up free with a multi-day pass for subsequent days. In Soll, they let you up from 3pm

Where are you staying? Personally I think the best piste skiing is in Flegere (10min bus) and or Les Houches. What time are you arriving, if you google Chamonix Bus then you can ensure don't waste time. Middle of the day frequency is normally less. Of course Brevant you can easily walk to from town, just walk uphill from Church for 5min.

Thanks for replies - we are staying at Chalet Whymper, a Bigfoot catered chalet in the centre of town. I think they pick up in Geneva (have prebooked lift passes on them) then to shop if you need anything hired, dump cases at chalet and straight to the slopes you want. Well thats what they did before. They specialise in 3 nighters so have it off to a tee.

Hi there - Totally agree with the above for Les Houches. Also well worth considering, for reasonable confident intermediates is the Balme area above La Tour and usually fairly quite especially in the week. Also a lovely blue run goes down to Vallorcine but can sometimes be closed if there is a lack of snow although pretty unlikely next wee. Enjoy.
