I had an avulsion fracture of my ankle and it's still not right, I feel the ligament moving when I twist in certain ways. I'd be interested in answers to the following questions:
1) from anyone who's had the same injury, how did you find ski-ing afterwards? I am/was at a secure red/get down somehow black level.
2) has anyone switched to cross country after that injury or something similar and how was it?
3) has anyone switched to snow shoe walking after a similar injury and how was that?
Glad of any views

I would think that downhill skiing would be more comfortable than cross country or snow shoeing because well fitting ski boots should restrain your ankle much more and limit twisting than the boots for the other activities would.
Some physio may help but the pain from injuries like this can take quite some time to settle fully and providing your physio/Dr is happy that it's adequately healed then getting back to activity in spite of the pain can help recovery and ultimately for the pain to lessen.

A friend broke her ankle couple years back and she was back on skis in less than 2 months. I am not sure what type of fracture she had though, and you need to get all clear from your doctor. Generally ski boots should protect your ankles from excessive twisting.
