my son had his brand new snowboard stolen today in morzine/avoriaz from outside a restaurant.he was sitting outside at the time but didn't see it happen. just want to know what do we do next time he buys one,is there any type of lock or can you take them inside with you,or do you just have to sit outside whatever the weather and keep an eye on it. feel so gutted for him.

I feel for your son, they are not cheap. I hope the t**t who stole it gets frostbite in his fingers and loses them. Its what we all worry about when stopping at restaurants but dont think it will happen to you. I will be very watchful next time.

This hallened to me last year in VDI (skis rather than board).
My travel insurance company didnt want to know as I had left the skis unaccompanied. I asked them what I should have done at a restaurant - they said that was my problem, not theirs.
We had taken ski insurance with the rental shop so I only has 150 euro excess to pay.
This year I got a ski lock from amazon. Something like

I am so sorry for him. For some time I have been thinking of how to make my skis more "un nickable" and have come up with 2 solutions
1. Small chain and combination lock to go around the bindings when I go to a restuarant
2. Sticking a QR code to them with my details on it using resin and hardener...you could use araldite or similar. An easy QR generator is http://qrcode.littleidiot.be/

Buy insurance on his next kit. Use the lock too. Also, he can ask a ski shop for a sticker so his board will appear as a rental one. Ski in Switzerland instead of France - I left my skis quite a few times outside overnight and always found them in the morning where I left them:)
