I'm travelling around Norfolk today and conditions here are bad for the uk. There hasn't been huge inches of snow, but the snow that fell has stayed on the roads and really low temps caused them to freeze and its stayed well below freezing all day.
Needless to say most people aren't equipped to drive in these conditions and don't also have the experience to cope with the end result being major delays due to accidents - mainly shunts and slides with people not understanding how to slow a car down - but worse still lots of roads have been closed or blocked because lorries are jack knifing on the ice and people are driving too slowly which leads to delays and shunts and lorries getting stuck going up hills and sliding down them.
The temp coming across near thetford at 9am were -12.5c with thick fog.

I've just seen the 3 day forecast for the uk and its set to stay very cold with heavy snow Friday and Saturday across much of the country.

I have a particular interest as I'm due to fly out from stansted Saturday and it remains to be seen if we can get there or fly out if we do.

So heads up to everyone travelling about or heading I and out of the up airports this weekend as its going to be difficult out there.

Best of British.

I'm flying from Newcastle on Saturday and its forecast to have snow. I'm not too worried about the airport as Newcastle has a good record for keeping running but your point about drivers is too true

I suspect that roads will be littered with idiots in their 316 and 318 pretend BMWs who cant move as it never occurred to them that buying a rear wheel drive car in the UK without winter tyres as a precaution was monumental stupidity.

Hopefully they'll keep the Metro running and I can avoid the roads anyway!

Best of Luck to you too Tony - and to everyone else who's travelling this week

Ironic as it seems that snow delays your skiing holiday, the airports have promised they are more prepared this year.

From what I've heard this weekends weather is the start of a long running scenario for a good few weeks (like the winter of 46 or 47 apparently).

So batten down those hatches and be sensible everyone, we all know it's winter, and we all just need to be a little prepared.

Hope there are aren't too many delays.

I've been out and about today. -6 when I left the office and -5.5 when I came back half an hour ago. The main roads are generally clear in Lincolnshire but as usual I'm very frustrated as there is always someone driving at 26mph. I may have 4 wheel drive and winter rubber but you only proceed at the common speed, unless decent overtaking opportunities arise. The roads in our village are still covered in ice/snow.

Hope those travelling this weekend are ok. I might suggest giving yourselves plenty of extra time!

Andy, have a good 'un in Val d'Isere. I've only been back 2 weeks and I'm itching to get over there again.
