Thanks Daved :D
I checked the internet prices (after the maximum discount I could get) in the Tignes shops for Skimium, Intersport and SkiSet, for what I hope is the same (high) quality of ski (difficult to tell) with boots.

Skimium = 110 euros for 'premium' skis
Intersport = 113 euros for 'noir'
Skiset = 142 euros for 'performance'

Last year I looked at Skimium, Intersport and Skiset in Serre Chevalier - just skis, best quality.
Skimium were the most expensive, nothing between Intersport and Skiset. Chose Skiset coz leaving skis and boots by lift was free with them.

Do think that every resort and even shop is a bit different and then it all gets complicated with various discounts and then there is what the tour operator can offer .....

AEOD - I just go with who can give me what I want and is convenient to accomodation.

How real are early booking deals with all these "discount" hire shops? I've already booked on-line with Intersport for January and they claim I got "50% discount".

7 days hire for 2x adult skis; 2x junior (skis + boots) mixture of 'bleu' et 'rouge'quality...180 euro = £144.

That's amazing value, the 'rouge' skis were 60 euro/£48, so do people ever actually pay 120 euro in store?
if I'm not skiing then I'm kayaking.
