In January I had a lesson - as you do and jolly good it was!
Bit about it here rather than repeating myself.

Now ....
As the chap said I need to practice, which will happen in Serre Chev next week.

But - I could really do with some help in suggesting any exercises to help me correctly place my hips.

What I want to achieve is a separation between my shoulders pointing nicely down the hill and my hips NOT rotating as much.

The reason is to help me effortlessly carve. I managed this following the instructor and some of the time in the days following when I was really concentrating.

By not rotating my hips as much I changed the angle between hips - knees - and feet. This, when it happened, made a marked change in the ease of skiing and turning.

Over rotating the hips to point too far down the hill puts more pressure on the legs, knees and ankle joints and makes skiing harder.

And for me the goal was to look for ways to make skiing as effortless as possible. So, any suggestions on exercises to help me embed this tweak in posture so it just happens?

Actually understand where you are coming from Tony but I don't think this is a relax issue.

When I relax I, unfortunately in this case, revert to old tried and tested technique - all very useful but if I can get this new thing I was taught stuck in my brain skiing will become even more effortless!

Do you have access to a gym with a Bosu (a round half ball with a plastic plate)..if so try standing on the plate with feet about 50cm apart and parallel with a 20kg weight across your shoulders and then bounce from one foot to the other with knees slightly bent

Help me understand Andy. Are you talking about counter rotating the hips to point to outside of the turn, whist the legs track with the carving skis?
because I'm so inclined .....

I need to keep my hips more in plane with my knees.
The result seems to be that my legs work together, rather than separately as I was taught 30 years ago.

So ....

It goes something like this.....
(and the changes from my older way)

Legs shoulder width apart..
Uphill ski/inside ski not quite so far forewards
Weight more evenly distributed

HIPS only slightly pointing down the hill (I think that's it) and more just in the direction of the skis.

And shoulders facing downhill(ish - depending on steepness)

For me the key is this hips thing as they tend to follow my shoulders which puts more strain on my legs and knees.
So my hips need to face more forewards and less downhill whilst maintaing an appropriate shoulders facing down the hill position.

I think

And what the guy was getting me doing really worked!
So it's got to be worth the effort and perseverence to let this get implanted in my poor old brain for the future.

Which brings me to my hope that one of you clever people will go "Ha Ha" - you need to do the "so and so" exercise, that'll get you in the right position.

But - it ain't half hard trying to explain something like this in a language that stands any chance of being understood !!

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your exact question but it's a drill we did to increase separation

As wih all drills-easier to start on a fairly mellow blue, place your poles together on your shoulders like the way people used to carry water back in the day. Idea is to keep the poles as parallel to the slope as possible.

We were told it keeps you in the fall line for as long as possible and it stops you rotating into the hill and gets better separation between upper and lower body.

Was done as part of slalom training but I'm sure it translates to carving too?

Rossy - I can see where that exercise is coming from and will give it a go.
