I have been skiing numerous times but this time the wife has let me take our 6 year old boy with me.
I have bought him a one piece ski suit but dont really know whether he may need anything else underneath it apart from some thermals.
Any advice will be great because I dont want to over dress him and have him sweat like a pig.

Better over dressed than have a chivering child.
I always have my kids wear a fleece underneath and if they get too hot, they can unbutton their jackets. Last year, the temps were as low as -20 degrees and my daughter couldn't ski she was shivering that much. Didn't help we were stuck up the mountain.

The biggest clothing issue for kids is usually the glove/sleeve interface.
because I'm so inclined .....

These should be ideal for the glove sleeve junction.

Definately recommend a fleece under the suit, some days my daughter came home abit warm but better than cold. Have a great time

It really depends on your son, just like big people some kids run hot some run cold.
My two daughters (11 and 6 on our last hol) tend to be of the run hot variety so unless it is getting into double figures below will just have either their merino thermal tshirts (great value from Aldi!) or a lightweight fleece under their jackets and nothing under their trousers. The one day my 6 year old did put both her fleece and thermals on on the last trip (around -8C at resort level) she spent the morning skiing with her jacket unzipped before heading back to the hotel at lunchtime to loose the fleece and leggings. On the same day some of her friends were wearing pretty much every item of clothing they had and still complaining about the cold!
I think the most important thing is listen to what he says and find what works for him, oh and if he is a run hot kid don't be surprised if he is asking for jacket and trousers after the first day!
