Bad Hofgastein or Schladming?

With the ski season coming up fast, I've come out of hibernation.

Was going to wait it out this year and book a 'last minute' deal but I don't think I can wait it out. I feel the need to book it up this month so that I know it's done.

Anyway, I'm considering either w/c 14/1/12 or 4/2/12 and narrowed it down to either Bad Hofgastein or Schladming. I have asked about Schladming in the past and a few posters have recommended it. Has anyone been to Bad Gastein? Is it any good?

Coop, I've got both on my short list. Both look good skiing, good snow, etc. However, out of the 2 I'd go for Bad Gastein, it looks a little more unusual and has a wider ski area. Plus a fantastic snow record.
I've looked at the Ski Miquel option, just waiting for a good deal to book now, but it definitely looks a good choice to me.

I've skied in Schladming and Bad Gastein. WE booked in BG with Ski Miquel and had a good holiday. For me, BG was a smart, sophisticated town but the skiing is a bit spread out. Schladming however is my favourite ski resort in Austria so what more can I say?
The failities and extent of the skiing is fantastic in Schladming. With the World Cup coming next year they have spent a FORTUNE upgrading the lifts and building new runs. The nightlife too is varied and there's noisy if you want it. Not as sophisticated as BG but it gets my vote. I'm sure yu'll have a great time in either. The january week is the Filzmoos balloon week so you shoudl see lots of balloons skimming over the Dachstein if your choose Schlads.

Schladming cos it has a great name! The skiing is really good too

Not been to BG but Schladming is fabulous. They have spent millions on the intrastructure including hoods on the chairs and heated seats (lovely when the weather is poor)and their snow making kept it open until late March.
Good variety of skiing and beautiful restaurants on every slope.

Well, after all the hours I spent looking at Bad Gastein and Schladming, I've finally decided to book a SkiMiquel deal to Baquiera-Beret (Spain).

I've heard it gets great snow, has some good off piste potential and an excellent British ski school. And more importantly, it isn't spread out like Gastein or Schladming which will allow us to ski as a family. My 2 little un's aren't a problem as they'll follow me down most slopes but my wife is a bit on the timid side and with it being a family ski holiday, I really wanted somewhere where we could all ski together at least some part of the day.

The Chalet Hotel there looks really good. I think thats a good choice. Although it does say the best of the resort is not for timid skiers and theres a lot of off piste to be found.
Good prices too there, a bit less than the Austrian options.
I'm still really keen on Bad Gastein but need the prices to come down and the snow to start falling.
