buying boots.....here or in resort?
Started by User in Ski Hardware, 12 Replies
hi there,

I live in edinburgh - we have one boot shop/maybe two.

there's another two in Glasgow.

I'm going to les gets/morzine area for xmas....so if you know of any good bootfitters there?

last year i got a pair of hundred year old big clumpy mens boots because i have large/short calves and they couldn't get much to fit me. the hire shops don't really seem to care what they give you - especially when they are busy.

I had to go back 5 times to get them sorted....only felt right on the last day (and when i say right - i mean, no pins and needles, no pain where the clips were at the top...etc..etc)

I would like a pair of ladies ones or something specially tailored for my larger calves and require a fair bit of hight inside....

cheers

I'm dead keen to get a hold of a pair of boots. i'm in my second week of skiing and would like something comfortable as last year was hell in hire boots.

anyhoo - quite brassic at the moment and don't have much in the way of £150-£200 for boots.

however by the time i go away i will have xmas money and have been paid again.

should i therefore take the opportunity to buy in resort (Les Gets) and also get the benefit of daily adjustments while i am there?

cheers.
Hello!

I've got a few beds left in the chalet i'm going to at Xmas (9 days for the price of seven) from 21st Dec-30th Dec.

It's a stunning 97 year old chalet - brought right up to date with underfloor heating etc. Ski back to door off-piste, 350m from the lift, 100m from the pub...

AND - it's now snowing in Les gets!! woo...and set to continue all weekend!

We've got two guys confirmed and three girls. skiers, boarders, guys, girls and any level welcome!

Let me know if you would like more info. Balance will need to be paid asap though...

cheers!
genuinely....the funniest thing i've read in ages!

ps mr snowgod - many thanks for your early dispatch of the promised items to the les gets area as well. unforunately we will require many more deliveries on the run up to Christmas or there will be many unhappy children.

many thanks

adding my two penneth worth. I've got a family room available in a chalet i'm going to which is a double bed and a mezz floor with two singles.

it's available for 9 days over Xmas (or seven if you want but no change in price) There's a garden out front which means sledging and snowmen! plus there's a skating rink and it's a very family oreiented resort. ski school is good - can vouch for this as was on it last year!

okay - it's in Les Gets though. Shock horror - only 1200m!! so here's the general thoughts on altitude (COLD) versus precipitation levels (the stuff that falls out of the sky)

"Altitude is however not the only important factor. Some areas like the Grand Massif or Mont-Blanc Val d’Arly benefit from a microclimate because of their close proximity to Europe’s highest peak, Mont-Blanc. These areas have a much more reliable snow record than other resorts at the same altitude or even than some higher-up.

Other important factors for good snow are North-facing slopes as whatever cover their get will simply last longer. What lies below the snow cover is also of importance: a few centimetres will be enough to ski on pasture whereas more will be required to cover a rocky surface. Finally resorts that have snow cannons to cover the lower slopes (generally the nursery slopes) offer a good guarantee. These will normally run at night from early December to top-up on natural snow cover. Above all what is important is to check the hard facts as in the end the snow history over a period of time is the only reliable indicator"

Why take a skiing holiday in Les Gets?
650km of piste
Good snow record
Good for beginners
Great for families
Excellent ski school
hiya,

i've got two rooms spare in the chalet i'm staying in (somebody dropped out) and I wondered if any couples would be interested in filling the space?

it's a gorgeous chalet - ski in (off piste) near the town centre and only 10 mins from avoriaz (top lift is 2400m - so if you are panicking about snow - you've got a snow sure on your doorstep)

here's the room that's available - all airport transfers, food and unlimited wine and beer!

let me know if you are interested and we can chat further offline.

dates are 21st-30th Dec (that's 9 days for the price of 7 - but you don't need to come for the full 9 days!)

mixed group - boarders, skiers of all levels!

cheers
sarah
What to wear in the evening

hi helen,

i'd go for a nice casual but warm jacket, maybe a puffa type thing or fur trimed (fake of course)

ugg type boots are good as they are waterproof (ish) and very cosy.

denim isn't very warm so maybe cord trousers or moleskin?

and a nice fluffy jumper or cardy that you can whip off when you get inside - it gets quite warm with all the sweaty bodies inside a pub!
