If you have your own skis, you could spend hours polishing the edges to a mirror finish.

Charcoal hand warmers - place them on the top/back of hand. I have some gloves with a zippered compartment to hold a charcoal warmer http://www.snowshack.com/detail/SNW+SW-40252+S_Swany+Womens+X-Change+II+Glove+Black (though I got them at TJMaxx for about $25). There are some very good leather ski mittens around that don't feel too bulky (http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Reusch-Leather-Ski-Racing-Noram-Fingerless-Mittens-/260690386111).

Southern comfort. You get a little sugar for energy thrown in.

I've got Millicent Martin stuck in my head, singing 'that the winter that wasn't' (it's over, let it go).
Horror stories from all across the US.... We're quite lucky locally so far, but who knows. |
I would think 168cm would be a minimum for your height/weight/experience. After a couple of hours, you really wouldn't notice the extra 18cm, but it will make a huge difference in the performance of the skis.

Boot gloves are neoprene covers for ski boots. Looks silly, but they really work.

Skis have changed A LOT. Most are easier to ski, but there are now many specialized skis for different niches in skiing. Best idea is to do a lot reading on the net. If you are getting back into it, an alround ski these days might have a 75 to 85 mm waist and 15 to 17 metre radius sidecut. If you intend to stay firmly on the groomed piste, a smaller waist will work. Maybe rent a few skis to see what you like.

Glad you found boot gloves. Anyone who ever gets cold feet should have these. They work.
