Unbelievable Winter! - Snow Melting in Finland

Winters are definately getting milder. I live in N Ireland and I remember as a child not being able to get to school because of a foot of snow on the main roads. We used to have really high snow drifts up the garage walls and would have to dig the car out. My uncle even built me an igloo once! :)

Hi there
Have just got back from Niederau on Saturday. The first couple of days we were there it rained on the lower slopes but was a blizzard and fog on the top slopes. However the snow was good. By the third day (Tue) it was a bit icy but we skiied Niederau again on the Thur and it was a bit better. We went to Auffach on the Wed and Fri and the snow was excellent. The bottom half of one of the black runs in Niederau (where the single seater chair lift is) was closed as it was supposed to be patchy. Hope this helps |
Going back to Niederau for the third time on Saturday. Does anyone know what the snow is like there at the mo and if it's due to snow again any time soon? Was panicking a bit cos it hasn't snowed for a couple of weeks now although I notice from the webcam this morning it's looking a lot better. Don't really want another week of skiing on slush and ice like last season. )

Thanks so much for the pic of Niederau. We are going there again in about 6 weeks, it'll be our third time. Snow is looking good so far. More pics please!! |
My first ski jacket was a Trepass one and I've worn it two seasons plus I've worn it about half a dozen times to the indoor snow slopes. I wear it for horse riding as well. It's been perfectly fine, the first year we went skiing it was about -10 through the day and it was warm enough with plenty of layers underneath. I got myself a new jacket this year though. I agree that their not as stylish or as well thought out as the more expensive jackets, but perfectly servicable for skiing.

Hi
I only started skiing a couple of years ago. I bought myself a pair of Peter Storm walking boots which I wear in the evenings. This year in Austria was very mild and there was no snow in the village so I just wore trainers to walk to the bars but walking style boots are a must if you want to go toboganning, etc. In the evenings my other half and I wear jeans, t-shirt, jumper/fleece/zip top and ski jacket although again the ski jacket wasn't really needed for the evenings this year in Austria. Depending on how cold it is and how far you have to walk anywhere you may also need a hat, scarf and gloves. It's true about going for breakfast and dinner in your ski gear. You may want to change out of your ski clothes right after coming off the slopes before some apres ski though - only because if you are just learning to ski you might become quite hot and sweaty with the effort! Nobody really wears anything really smart - casual is definately the order of the day. |
Hi there
I went skiing for the first time a couple of years ago. I bought a kids Trespass ski jacket (I'm only 5') for £25 from TK Maxx and have worn it for two seasons and also a few times to the indoor snow slopes. I've also worn it for horse riding and it's been perfectly good. My salopettes were about £20 - £25 from Mountain Warehouse. My hubby got a pair of Iguana salopettes for £50 in TK Maxx last year and they've been really good. He also bought an Animal ski jacket last year for £100 but he wears it all the time, not just for ski hols. Hope this helps. |
Hi
Does anyone know of any local Austrian holidays in March? We'll hopefully being going on 15th for a week, just wondering if it'll be busy |
